Fitness Friday: A Laid Back Approach

I was doing pretty good with Fitness Fridays for about about six weeks, but I totally dropped the ball. The last one was back in August!

In case you’re interested, the other topics I covered were as follows:

I’ll be honest with you, I haven’t worked out all week. Then why bring back the Fitness Friday now, Colleen?

Well, I take that back. I went to Body Pump on Monday morning, but I ducked out early, as a migraine from the previous night hadn’t fully subsided. *Note: Weight lifting does NOT help a head ache.

The thing is, it’s been great. I’ve slept in until 6:45 (!!) all week, and I haven’t felt one bit of remorse or guilt. Like, none. (If you’ve been reading for a while, you know how huge that is for me.)

Actually, over the past few weeks, my approach to fitness has been pretty laid back. I’ll go to about four classes a week, and on weekend mornings, my workout consists of an hour long walk with Cory and Campbell. Those walks are fantastic, and I truly look forward to them.

Brown’s Island is our favorite #rva :)

I applaud the bloggers who I follow who go balls to the wall all day, every day. I appreciate the lovely ladies who are constantly tweaking their diet to be as clean and paleo/vegan/vegetarian/no carbs as possible. In a way, I feel that they’re better than me. More dedicated, if you will.

Because, let’s be honest: I eat meat, cheese, sugar (real and fake), carbs, and foods that come out of boxes and bags.

aaaaaaaaa

If a fall into the comparison trap, those people make me feel a little bad about myself. How stupid, right?!

But then I remember, that as long as what I’m doing works for me, that’s all that really matters. And that’s the message I want you to remember for yourself, too. :)

Who knows, maybe next week I’ll be tweeting pictures of a treadmill after I crush a 5 mile run (highly unlikely) or maybe I’ll make it to the gym 6 days out of the week (again – unlikely),

aaaaa

but all I know is that I’ll be doing what feels good and right. I’m not forcing or guilting myself into doing anything.

That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it! ;) Have a wonderful weekend, my friends! We’re off to do the final walk through of the house!

Back to the Same Old, Same Old

Happy Monday, friends! How was your weekend?

After being away all week, I was thrilled to be home celebrating the wedding of our friends Cush and Rachel. I was super thrilled to see Cory, too. (It looks like some things never change ;) )

I love attending weddings of my college friends because it’s always like a mini reunion. After graduation, most of us were pulled to different parts of the state, so I don’t get to see everyone as often as I’d like. Lucky for me, things always fall right into place – as if we never missed a day.

The wedding took place at a beautiful country club here in Richmond; and I’ve gotta say, they totally lucked out with the perfect weather! It was a gorgeous day for a gorgeous couple.

Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Cushman!

Now it’s back to the same old, same old – something I’m quite looking forward to. Traveling is fun, but I’m such a creature of habit. Take me out of my routine for too long, and I start falling apart at the seams ;)

Let’s chat –

  • Do you travel often for work?
  • Are you a creature of habit?

The Hard Work Has Paid Off!

Since we made the move to Richmond two months ago, I have been referred to as a “kept woman” and a “lady of leisure” on more than one occasion. Because I moved for my husband’s job, people assumed I was taking it easy and riding the wave.

That bothered me a great deal.

Clearly, education bears no weight. For the past two months, I have been out of town every week on Mondays and Tuesdays due to class.

My round trip to school used to be 30 minutes; now it’s 4 hours. And that’s not counting the 30 minutes each way to and from my parent’s house (where I was staying on Monday nights.)

And when I wasn’t in school or traveling, I was spending time driving to and from interviews, scouring the internet for hours applying to jobs, and  writing cover letters. And I also started volunteering.

So yeah, it’s been a real cake walk.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve enjoyed this flexible schedule. And it’s not lost on me how fortunate we are to even have the option to live like we have been living. I have learned more about myself in the past two months than I could have ever imagined. And honestly, I think it was the best thing that could have happened for our marriage.

But I’ve been getting restless. I need work, to be busy. I like to work. And, well folks, the hard work has paid off!

As of Monday, I was offered an amazing, wonderful, perfect-for-me job! It’s my first “real” job, as in, not “just-a-paycheck” job. This is setting me up for a career that I couldn’t be more thrilled about!

That said, I’m off to search for a new First Day of Work outfit :) Have a great one!

Weekend Wrap Up

Hi, friends! I apologize for the minimal/late blogging this weekend. I was out having fun yesterday and today has been consumed with driving, packing and unpacking.

Yesterday was such a good time, though! Not to mention absolutely gorgeous outside!

When we got to Richmond, we didn’t waste much time before we were out walking around in the beautiful sunshine. We made our way to Verry Berry, which happens to be the best frozen yogurt place I’ve ever visited. Even better than my beloved Sweet Frog! If you live near the Richmond area, you MUST go to Verry Berry. Soon. And often.

Just look at the toppings bar!

There was tons of fruit to the left of this, but I was less interested in that ;)

Jamie and Emily said my fro-yo looked pathetic, so I’ll forego any pictures – but man, it was tasty!

We passed this cute coffee shop while we were walking around, so we decided to venture in when we all agreed that the fro-yo (at noon) would not hold us over until dinner time. I ordered half of a turkey and cheese sandwich that was topped with Granny Smith slices. Yummay!

We ended up walking around this super, super cute part of Richmond called Cary Street. We walked into all kinds of fun shops – one being a neat toy store. Yes, we did try on the hats and glasses in the “dress up” section :)

We finally made our way to local Mexican restaurant and got our grub on. It’s what we do best ;)

I don’t know WHAT that white sauce was, but it was fantastic.

The night was relatively low key. We stopped by to say hi to Jamie’s parents and enjoyed a glass of wine.

My camera was acting like a silly bitch and would not focus. Just squint a little bit ;)

We spent the rest of the night in sweats, drinking cocktails and watching chick flicks! Perfection.

I can’t lie, I’m dreading getting back into the swing of the real world tomorrow. Back to school. Back to work. Back to eating dinner alone or in class. I cannot explain to you how happy it made me to see Cory every day this week. Life is just so much better when you have someone to come home to, you know? Five more months. Fiiiive mooooree months :D

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, my friends!

Let’s chat – How do you prepare yourself for the work/school week when the weekend is coming to an end? When a vacation ends, do you find it difficult to get back into your normal routine?

Life’s Most Important Questions

Hi, friends! I’m headed to Richmond for a Girl’s Day/Night!! AH, what a perfect end to Spring Break :) If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, it will be no surprise as to who I’m spending my time with. Jamie and Emily of course! ;) I feel so blessed to have Jamie living up here in NOVA and that I’m able to see Emily as often as I do.

Last night in preparation for our girl’s day, Jamie and I were discussing a very important topic (She’s grey. I’m green)

Jamie is my go-to person for most of life’s toughest questions. Like: Jamie, is it ‘naked’ or ‘necked?’ Or: Jamie, are you automatically an asshole if you drive a Hummer? A personal favorite happened a year ago when we were in college. It was a Thursday night (bar night) and it was pouring. I mean pooouring and we had to walk to the bar. So I asked: Jamie, is it okay if I tuck my jeans into my rain boots and wear them to the bar? She’s a good friend: No, Colleen. That is not acceptable, even if you do have a boyfriend.

I’m glad I have such a good friend.

Well, friends, Jamie will be here soon! I’m looking forward to laughing until my side hurts, eating fro-yo for lunch and chowin’ down on some Mexican for dinner – and enjoying an adult beverage or two ;)

Question: Do you tell your friend if she’s making a faux pas? Would you want her to tell you? ;) Do you have a go-to friend that will always tell you the truth?

Home Again, Home Again

Hi there! Friends, I seriously cannot get over this beautiful weather. I am silly to think that Spring could be here for real?!

Before heading back home, we went to one of my favorite restaurants in Richmond, Cafe Caturra. I had half a veggie panini with a raspberry walnut salad on the side. It was fantastic.

We even ate outside!! I could feel the warmth of the sun on my back and it was heavenly.

I love Cory because we’re normally on the same page. On our way out of Richmond he asked “Do you want Sweet Frog one more time?” YES PLEASE! :)

Fro-yo two days in a row? Sounds good to me! Can you guess which one is mine? ;)

Since this upcoming week is my spring break, Cory and I are planning on eating dinner together most nights, which made this weekend’s grocery trip exciting.

We are trying to practice our “meal planning.” Once we get married and move in together (!!!) we’re going to have to buckle down and make a meal plan for the week in order to make our lives easier and cut down on our grocery budget. If we have our meals planned out ahead of time, we’ll be less likely to buy random groceries we don’t need. Does anyone else do this now?

Well, I think the rest of the night is going to be spent relaxing. The premier of Sister Wives is on tonight, and I want to see it.

Have you seen this show?! Does anyone else think that the husband is the creepiest man ever? The whole thing just boggles my mind.

I hope you’re having a relaxing Sunday!

Let’s chat – Did you enjoy this weekend’s beautiful weather? Do you plan out your meals for the week before going grocery shopping? How do you relax on Sundays? Have you seen Sister Wives – what’s your take on the whole thing?
