My One Big Fitness Goal for 2012

You know, I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions. I think they’re junk. I do, on the other hand, love a good goal.

If you’ve been around these parts for a while, you know that my relationship with running has seen it’s ups and downs. When I started training for the half marathon, there were days that I wanted to shoot myself – but overall, I genuinely enjoyed running towards a goal.

(Pun absolutely intended.)

So 2012 is going to be a big running year for me. I’ve got big plans, a running buddy, and a pretty serious commitment on my hands.

In 2012, Cory and I are both going to run 1,006 miles. Get it? By the end of 2012, we’ll have run a combined 2,012 miles.

So romantic, I know.

When you break it down, 1,006 miles in 366 days (leap year!) equals about 3 miles a day. That doesn’t sound like that big of a deal, I know.

But there will be days that I’m busy, sick days, or vacation days when I don’t (gasp!) feel like working out.

Because some days, rummy bears are more important than running.

So I’ll be aiming to run 25 miles each week for the rest of the year. That will include some races that I have up my sleeve, but overall, it’s going to take a great deal of holding myself accountable and hitting the pavement on a very consistent basis.

Maybe by the end of the year I’ll feel like a real, true runner. Maybe.

Am I nervous? A little bit. Do I think I’ve lost my mind? Yes, but that’s nothing new. Do I think I can do this? Absolutely.

So there you have it! My one big fitness goal for 2012. I’ll be writing frequent updates here on the blog, but you can also follow our progress on Daily Mile or follow #2012in2012 on Twitter.

PS – Cory also says he loves reading encouraging comments when it comes to running – so Tweet us or give us some love to look back on when we’re feelin’ lazy ;)

Let’s chat – Do you have any specific goals you’re working on in 2012? Fitness, personal, career…anything goes!

what a fun goal!! i love it!! i especially love that you have a lot of flexibility in it… some days you can go for long runs to compensate for your rest days or you could do 3 miles a day which is totally managable!! and how fun you’re doing it with cory?? happy 2012!!

Exactly! I love how flexible it is, but it still requires me to be consistent with my running :) And YES, it’s way fun that Cory and I are doing it together! :) Happy New Year, Linz!!

I love this idea! I’ve been trying to come up with some type of exercise-related resolution, but I didn’t want to commit myself to run another half marathon. I think I’m going to set myself a goal like this too. I may just have to stick to 1000 since I don’t have anyone to share the number with. I love that y’all are running 2012 miles.

Love it! Daily mile is so much fun because when I look back at all my miles from last year it adds in those fun stats that motivated me. This year I have a ton of goals but mainly to run the marathon I signed up for, to move on from a broken relationship once and for all and to settle into my career.

I definitely have some fitness goals for myself! I’d like to drop a little bit of weight but continue to tone up :) I’d also like to hit the gym no less than 5 times a week and take a nutrition class. Sounds like a lot but I think I can do it!

YAY COLLEEN!!!!!! I don’t know if you remember but I had emailed you a couple of weeks ago about a half marathon and training. Just to update you…I SIGNED UP FOR ONE YESTERDAY!!!!!! It’s in June. I’m scareddddddddd!

    • Colleen says

Of course, I remember, Katelyn!! :) CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I’m so excited for you!! You will totally rock it, girl! You got this!

That’s an absolutely awesome goal for you and your man! Kinda jealous of your creativity haha! And just think, next year you’ll only need to add 1/2 more miles each for 2013 miles :P

This year I’m making a few goals and sticking to them! Years past I’ve made goals but have forgotten about them within the first week since they didn’t really have any significance in my life… This year I’m trying to focus on goals that will personally effect me and my future!

    • Colleen says

I’ve done the same thing in the past. Make “resolutions” and forgotten about them by February. Making goals seems like a better idea to/for me :) I hope you’re able to accomplish your 2012 goals, Allison!

what a great idea!! I want to try for 1200, but I am not sure I can do that – I am going to aim for at least 1000 – that is so awesome he wants to join in on that goal, and what an incredible support you guys have for each other – very inspiring!

  10. says

omg that’s a crazy awesome goal! haha i reallllllly love it! and it really is romantic. you guys should run your last few miles together on like a honeymoon part 2 hahaaha now THAT would be romantic :)

What an awesomely unique goal! I plan on scaling back my running this year because the marathon I am about to “run” in less than a week is not going to go well since I’m pretty certain I am injured and burned out on it but I want to workout 5 days a week and incorporate yoga! Good luck with your goal:)

WOW – when you tweeted a teaser to your big New Years Resolution I thought for sure your plan was to run a full marathon…but I’m loving the 2012 in 2012! How awesome for you and Corey to work towards together!? It won’t be easy, but you guys can DEFINITELY do it! WOO!
