Don’t Go Without a Plan

When my alarm went off this morning, I believed it was Wednesday. I laid in bed thinking of my schedule, and I was thankful I’d made it to the week’s half-way mark.

Then I realized it’s Tuesday.

That hurts, doesn’t it?

After a moment of silent weeping, I hopped out of bed, determined to stick to my plan of going to the gym.

While I definitely sweat and got my heart pumping, I made the number one workout mistake: I didn’t have a plan for the gym.

I knew I wanted to work with weights, but I hadn’t written down a set workout, and at 5:30 AM, it’s difficult (for me at least) to just fly off the cuff and make a great workout happen.

I need assistance that early.

To make a short story long, I ended up doing a hodgepodge of a strength workout, followed by 20 minutes on the ArcTrainer.

Tomorrow will be more organized, I can guar-an-darn-tee ya.

Breakfast was a magnificent cereal combo. I filled my bowl with Honey Nut Cheerios, Special K and Oatmeal Squares and I topped it all off with sliced banana.

This is always my favorite way to start the day. This, along with reading blogs, of course 😉

Now I’m off to work, and then starts the second night of classes! Last night went really well, and my fingers are crossed that tonight goes the same way :)

Edit to add: Yesterday’s post – Cory and I did not clean up my parent’s yard alone. Oh, no no. We had the help of two of my uncles (which was SO appreciated!) Good thing one of them gave me an oh-so-subtle reminder of this via the comments section 😉

Let’s chat –

Do you always have a plan when you go to the gym, or do you just wing it?

What’s your favorite breakfast?

Taking the Highroad

I’m having a tough time with today’s post. If you follow me on Twitter and notice my tweets, you may have caught on to the fact that yesterday I was a little…perturbed.

I have something that needs to be written about, but I think it belongs in my private journal and not the blogosphere.

I’m very careful about what I post on the internet. I always ask myself “Would I be willing to sign this and have it published on the front page of the Washington Post?” If it’s not an overwhelming “YES” then I keep it off the blog/Facebook/Twitter.

I really try to take the highroad in life. Trust me, there are things that piss me off, but I often wonder if it’s worth lowering my standards and getting catty.

Note: Let’s be clear – the “highroad” theory does not apply when I’m venting in my living room with Cory or leaving a “You won’t f-ing believe this” voicemail on Jamie’s phone.

Just wanted to clarify that :)

With the helpful suggestions from some blog friends, I’ve decided to keep my rage-filled post in the drafts folder and turn to my own personal journal.

I guess I just wanted to share that dumb bitches really annoy me :)

I got myself out of bed early for the second day in a row. Small victories, friends. Sometimes when I get out of my workout/early morning routine, it is such a struggle to get back into the swing of things. But I’m getting there!

At the gym I ran through a strength workout twice. It was a hodge-podge of sorts and I didn’t count reps today – I just did the max reps. It was kind of nice not having to count!

  • Push ups – “real” ones!
  • Lat raise
  • Tricep dip
  • Ballet squat
  • Jump squats
  • Seated rows
  • Hammer curls
  • Back extensions
  • Lat pull down machine

I have two workout related questions for you –

Question one – Is this appropriate?

This guy is working out (and laying down on equipment!) without a shirt on! Blahhh!! It grossed me out. This is the second time I’ve seen this guy in the gym sans shirt. Gross.

Question two – Is anyone a member at LA Boxing? There are two near me, and I’m really considering trying it out. I’d love to know what you think if you’re a member there!

Have a happy Wednesday, my friends!!

    Let’s chat –

See above + how do you deal with dumb bitches?

    I Can Be So Immature

Good morning! And a special hello to all those new readers who are stopping by – I promise we have a good time here, so stick around! :)

Let’s get real for a hot second. I have a little bit of a stomach issue – and it sometimes tends to cramp my running schedule (no pun intended 😉 )

I know many of my readers are avid runners, so is there anyone out there who can commiserate with me that running (sometimes) = an upset stomach?

Regardless, I had some quality HIIT time with the treadmill this morning. I surprised myself that my sprints were in the 8.7 range.

    That’s fast for me.

I did 45 seconds – one minute on with 45 seconds of rest (3.6 mph) for 20 minutes.

Breakfast was none other than a beautiful cereal combo.

I am such a fan of oatmeal, but cereal combos have been stealing the show in my world. It’s a party in a bowl :)

    Anthony Weiner

Most of you may know that Anthony Weiner has been all over the news because he took a picture of his nether-regions and Tweeted it to a girl (while his pregnant wife was at home. I digress.)

Every time I hear a news reporter make a comment about Weiner, I wonder “how do they not giggle?!”

I can be so immature 😉

Anyway – last night I saw that Julie and Alyssa were making Weiner jokes on Twitter. I immediately mentioned this to Cory and we went to to town.

I kid you not – we spent 20 minutes coming up with lewd Weiner campaign slogans/headlines and laughing like school kids.

Some of our top Weiner jokes

    Weiner ahead in the polls

    Weiner shrinks in polls

    Members of the Weiner Cabinet…

    (Opposing candidate) beats Weiner

You can’t go wrong with Weiner

Okay, maybe some of you are laughing. Maybe some of you are totally disgusted. Either way – I hope you have a fantastic Friday! :)

    Let’s chat –

Care to come up with a Weiner joke of your own? :)

What’s in your ideal cereal combo??

PS – ‘Like’ The Lunchbox Diaries on Facebook!

    Mean People, You Suck

Hey there! How’s everyone doing? This sounds weird – but I’m actually glad it’s Monday. I had a blast this weekend, but I’m glad to be home and back to my regular schedule of things :)

Let me say – you ladies were right: Stop forcing the gym, and my workout mojo will come back in no time 😉 After no workouts of any kind on Saturday or Sunday, I was itching to sweat it out this morning.

If I stay away from the treadmill for too long, I build this mental block that I can’t run because it’s too hard. This morning I was nervous about running, but I pumped out an easy 3 miles in a little under 30 minutes. So I can do it – whew! 😉

I love indulging on the weekends, but I am more than happy to get back to my favorite cereal combo and a home-packed lunchbox.

    Mean People

I’m pretty new to blogging and I received my first real mean comment on Saturday. I thought “what to do, what to do?” I asked my blog friends via Twitter  if they “accept” mean comments, and everyone that responded to me said no (all with valid reasons.)

And while I completely agree that posting every mean comment is totally unnecessary and not even worth it, I thought “why the hell not?”

Really, if you’re that much of a coward to read blogs while anonymously hiding behind your keyboard and making mean comments – not before pausing your World of Warcraft game, of course – you need a swift kick in the face from Reality.

This silly comment didn’t get a rise out of me or make me feel bad; quite the opposite really. If you have haters, you’ve got to have lovers too. So thanks “Brittany” – you made my day! 😀

    Let’s chat –

What’s your take on mean commenters?

Bloggers, what do you do when you receive nasty comments?

    I’ve Got Sunshine

Hey there, beautiful people! I hope your Wednesday is going swimmingly :)

This morning I woke up and headed to the gym for a strength workout with free weights. I adapted this workout from a class I took in college, so here’s what the circuit looked like

    • Lunges (30 x 2)
    • Squats (30 x 2)
    • Shoulder squeeze (15 lbs, 15 reps x 2)
    • Lawn mower (12.5 lbs, 15 reps x 2)
    • Bicep curl into shoulder press (10 lbs, 15 reps x 2)
    • In and out bicep curls (10 lbs, 16 reps x 2)
    • Lat and side raises (5 lbs, 15 reps x 2)
    • Tricep dips (body weight, 15 reps x 2)
    • “Bench press” (two 15 lbs, 15 reps x 2)

It left me sweating and my arms feeling like jell-o. I’ll chalk that up to a strength success :)

I came home and made myself a fabulous cereal combo that I downed in about 2 minutes 😉

Quaker Oat Squares, Kashi Multi Grain Oats & Honey, Cheerios, banana, chia seeds, almond slivers

Topic of Discussion – Summer Sun

Okay, so it’s that time of year when all of my favorite health magazines start printing articles about how being in the sun will 100%, without fail or doubt, give you sun cancer.

(Which is why it confuses me that many of their models are sun-bathing)

Mixed media messages. I’ll save that for another day…

They print articles about a happy, successful 20-somethings who had the world at her finger tips, but oops – she didn’t wear sunscreen… and she died of melanoma.

Upon reading said articles, my heart races and I enter full-fledged hypochondriac mode. I scour my body in the mirror searching for misshaped and/or discolored moles. Cory tells me I’m not allowed to read these things anymore 😉

But it worked once. I did in fact find a discolored, misshaped mole and it turned out to be pre-cancerous. Due to that, I hid from the sun last summer, but it was miserable.

Clearly, that effect has worn off this summer.

Due to my little scare, I now protect myself from the sun. I wear sunblock when I decide to lay out – a concept I did not implement the first 21 years of my life. I also limit my sun time now. If I’m going to lay by the pool, I smear on the sun screen and give myself 1 hour.

I know that’s more than the recommended 20 minutes, but hey. Sista’s got a wedding in two months. I will not be pasty.

I also invested in some Jergen’s Natural Glow lotion.

Because I already have some color, I apply it every other day and it helps me maintain a “glow” :)

Being scared from the sun is not fun. I love the feeling of laying by the pool or on the beach and soaking up the hot sun. Does the “everything in moderation” idea count towards sun as well?

    Let’s chat –

Do you wear sunscreen when you lay out?

Do you go to tanning beds?

Or is this not even something you ever think about? It wasn’t something I ever thought about until I went to the dermatologist!

    Surprise Gym

While I don’t normally bare-ass it on Fridays, I do enjoy the more casual and laid back feel of the work day 😉

The gym that I normally go to on campus is closed for the summer, but little did I know that there is another equally large gym right around the corner.

    Well, wouldya look at that…

This blows the mind of a girl who went to a tiny school with only one gym and only one dining hall. This morning I did intervals on the ArcTrainer for 30 minutes. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – with the right resistance, that baby can give me a good workout!

Today is the “sell by” date on my milk. That always makes me a little wary. I did the smell test. Not too abnormal. I did the shake test. No chunks (thank you, freshman year, for proving that happens). With all systems go – I made a hearty cereal combo 😀

Quaker oatmeal squares, Honey Nut Cheerios, Corn Flakes, chia seed, banana

Today is part two of the interview process so I better go get ready! I hope you have a fabulous Friday! Here’s to a long weekend full of fun, family and relaxation! :)

Let’s chat – Do you have any plans for the long weekend?! Do you drink milk on/after the sell by date? I drank it today, but I probably won’t drink it tomorrow. It’s not usually a problem I have – I go through milk so quickly!

We’ve Got an App for That.

Hello and happy Wednesday!! Yes, I think that is a long weekend that I see on the horizon :) Once again, thank you so much for all your kind words. Who knew that there are so many directionally challenged girls out there?! (No men are allowed to answer that question.)

I’m still living on campus, and the gym that opens early is now under construction for the summer. Womp. So it was back to P90X this morning.

I did lunges and squats until I was blue in the face. Okay. Not really, but I think you get the point. It was a legs and back day.

There’s nothin’ that can make my morning great like a perfect cereal combo. It seems silly. I know. But there’s something about a bowl of cereal that I just love!

I have to eat my cereal with just enough time left before I have to leave for work, or I’ll pour myself a second bowl without hesitation :)

    Blogger App?

Who out there has an iPhone?? Well, I think I may have found the app for bloggers and foodies. Have you heard of Foodish? Cory found it on Gizmodo and sent it my way, and I think I’m going to purchase it.

You take picture of what you eat (many of us have that covered to some extent) and then you give it a smiley face rating on how healthy it is. It gives you a visual representation of what you’ve eaten for the day, or even for weeks at a time. There’s no calorie counting and no food weighing. It just seems kind of fun!

That said, I’m off to pack my lunch and head to work!

Enjoy your day! I’ll catch ya later! :)

Let’s chat – Is the Foodish app something you’d use? Do you already have it on your phone?

    Why Does Misery Love Company?

Hello, my fine friends! How’s everyone feeling today?! I’m feeling a tad bit sluggish due to my inhalation of a piece of white chocolate – raspberry cheesecake last night at The Cheesecake Factory.

Cory and I shared this ginormous slice of heaven (minus the whipped cream.)

Do I feel guilty? Yes, I kind of do. Am I going to fret all day? No – I’m just going to do my best to make healthier decisions today. Easy peasy, lemon squeezey :)

This morning I enjoyed a sweaty P90X plyometrics session which was swiftly followed up by my beloved cereal combo :)

Quaker oatmeal squares, Honey Nut Cheerios, Kashi Crisp!, almond slivers and 1/2 a banana

Okay, so now let’s get into the stuff behind this post’s title.

We all know the saying Misery Loves Company, right?

I mean, I get it – kind of. If I’m feeling down in the dumps, I don’t necessarily want to throw you a party to celebrate something happy in your life.

I’d rather bitch and moan with a friend who likes vodka.

But those feelings are normally momentary – not a way of life. And let’s be honest; I’d still throw you a party if you deserved one 😉

Anyway, Cory and I were talking yesterday about how we’ve noticed that some people are so quick to rain on a love parade (or any kind of parade, really.)

Here’s an example of a conversation that happened a few days ago:

Me: Yeah, we’re finally going to move in together after the wedding (insert giddy grin here) I’m so excited!

*Debby D: Wait – you’ve never lived together?!

Me: Nope. We wanted to wait.

Debby D: Woah. Psh. Humpf.(Cue more huffing and puffing) Get ready for the most difficult year of your life!

Me: Wow, thanks Debby. You’re quite the ray of sunshine. (<— Okay, this part happened in my head)

*Names may have been changed to protect the identity of a real life sour-puss.

    Why are people like this?

    Are they really that miserable?

I truly hope not, because that would be tragic – but it’s disappointing how people so rarely want to tell you something positive. If someone is happy, why on Earth would another person feel the need to say something negative? This totally blows my mind.

I don’t have a profound conclusion to this thought (do I ever?) – but I wanted to get it out there. Maybe other people have experienced people like Debby D?

Disclaimer: Let’s get real – encountering a Debby or Nancy doesn’t truly affect me, but it does make me wonder: WTF?

If you have any thoughts whatsoever on this subject, please share! If not, thanks for reading my vent-session 😉

    Cereal Crisis

Hello, hello! Happy Friday, friends :) It’s a pretty gloomy day here, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s the weekend – so I’ll take it!

I’m surprised that I even remembered what to do when I got to the gym this morning. It feels like it’s been 10 years since I’ve been. I did this strength circuit and spent a very sweaty 25 minutes running on the treadmill. I’ve read that if you do intervals, you don’t have to stay on that wretched machine the treadmill as long compared to a one-speed run.

If that’s not true, please don’t correct me.

Two very scary things happened this morning in regards to my favorite meal. #1 – I had no milk or cereal in my possession. #2 – Giant was out of Quaker Oatmeal Squares. I went ape shit and knocked cereal boxes off the wall in hopes that one solitary Quaker Oats box was hiding amongst the granola and Kashi – but no such luck.

I had to resort to Puffins.

Don’t get me wrong. Puffins were my jam during my freshman year of college. But I think I ate them one-too-many times, if you knowwaddaImean. Now I just smell my old dorm when I eat them.

    Stranger things have happened, friends.

    Foods Alive

The only thing that helped mend my broken heart was the fact that Foods Alive sent me some fantastic products to try out – chia seeds being one of them. They made an appearance in my poor-man’s cereal combo and really stole the show.

They sent me some of their flax crackers and raw peanuts as well!

I opened the Maple Cinnamon crackers as soon as I got my paws on them, and they were delicious. The peanuts were unlike any peanuts I’ve ever tasted – maybe because I’ve never had raw peanuts? I’d be lying if I said I like my peanuts sans salt, but these were good and healthy-tasting. I think I’ll be making them into peanut butter soon! :)

Alrighty, friends! I am now getting into research mode to find cute and exciting wedding reception decoration ideas. If you have any, send ’em my way! Have a great Friday! I’ll catch ya later 😉

Let’s chat – What flavor cracker sounds better to you – Maple Cinnamon or Mexican Fiesta?

    Slow Runnings

Hey there! How’s your Tuesday going so far? I’m dragging this morning. I stayed up too late because I was absolutely glued to all things Royal Wedding on TLC. Judging by Twitter conversations last night, I’m not the only one who’s counting down the hours until the Friday nuptials 😉

Anyway, I’ll save that chatter until the end of the week (but feel free to tweet me about it 😉 )

    Professional Status

As some of you saw, Cory gave me my first golf lesson yesterday. Cory’s grown up playing golf, and I thought it would be a neat thing to try that would allow me to step outside my box.

I’m really bad at remembering to keep my knees bent and my butt out. It’s an extremely awkward stance, and when I looked at the older men around me, no one else resembled a confused duck quite like myself.

Cory did an excellent job as Coach. It’s not easy to teach someone like me a new trick because I get frustrated. Easily.

I completely missed the ball several times, but to my own credit, I hit some really good ones too. If they got air, they qualified as PGA material 😉

    Workout and Breakfast

Now that I’m a pro golfer, I felt that a good weight lifting session was in order in this morning 😉 I followed up my workout with a phenomenal cereal combo.

Cereal never gets old, friends. Never.

Tonight I’m starting a new volunteer experience, and it’s pretty unique. You’ll never guess what I’m doing. I’ll fill you guys in soon!

Let’s chat Okay, I lied about holding off on the Royal Wedding chatter: Have you been sucked in? What’s the last new thing you learned (sport, recipe, party trick..)?
