Be Still, My Heart: A Day of Firsts

I had a “first” yesterday and I’m pretty excited about it.

I joined a gym.

As in, a gym that’s not located in my apartment complex.

As in, a gym that has more than three treadmills.

As in, a gym that offers tons of amazing group classes!!

I’ve miss group fitness classes so bad it hurts. Spin. Body Pump. Bootcamp.

Be still, my heart.

Although I did run a fast 4 miles at the gym and felt great afterwards, I have to admit that my day was pretty uneventful. I was looking for any reason to be outside, so I took Campbell on walk. Coming home, I was startled by what I thought was a dead animal on the side of the road.

Well that’s a first. Someone’s hair piece in the road. Welcome to Richmond.

Then it was time to tackle the pantry. I bow to you if your pantry is meticulously organized. I had shit falling on my head, flour spilling all over the place, and cereal boxes taking up too much room.

At that point, I decided that progress had been made for the day because everything had been taken out of the bags.

Now I just have to figure out the best arrangement so when I take out my oatmeal I don’t  cause a food avalanche…

Let’s chat – Do you think belonging to a gym is a waste of money? I never joined a gym because I thought it was a selfish way to spend money – but now that I don’t have another option, I know it’s anything but selfish.

I definitely belong to a gym. Luckily gyms around my area are reasonable. It’s $35/month for me but that includes childcare, tanning (which I never use), and a hydromassage bed (which I need to start using more! ha!).

Luckily I am on Megan’s Mom’s family plan since she works part time at a gym, so I go for free. But I think a gym is like any other luxury (nails, beer, whatever). You get enjoyment out of it, so why not? Plus you are bettering yourself, which is more than a lot of luxuries can afford you.

I have belonged to a gym since graduating college. no other options for me! :)

and, about that hairpiece. try having a restaurant customer LEAVE her weave at her table after dining at your tiki bar.

yeah, you heard me. we put it in a to go box and drew a face on the box. she was unimpressed.

I used to think it was a waste of money because everyone I knew who had a membership didn’t go! But now that I’ve gotten used to going at the one in my apartment I think I could definitely make that extra effort to go to a gym even if it’s not a short walk away.

I belong to a gym.. for me its hard to get to the gym in the spring and summer because we like to be outside as much as possible. But if we can get our butts out of bed in the morning to go lift, I can still get a nice run in outside after work!

I always belong to a gym except right now! My building has an awesome fitness center in it that I use daily!

I Chicago I Constantly see hair weave on the road, isn’t that weird?

Hi Colleen! It’s Jessica Romine, from Edison (swim team :-) ) I just found your blog off your Facebook link, and wow, you’ve got a great thing going here! I’m trying to fight an innate distaste for working out and an IT band issue in my hips to work up to a 10k, so I’ll be sure to stop by here for some inspiration!

Looks like your life is going pretty swimmingly – but I don’t envy you trying to get your life unpacked and organized, that can get overwhelming!

Jessica!! Oh my gosh, how are you?! That’s great that you’re working towards and 10K even though you strongly dislike working out – it sounds like we have a lot in common :) I’m glad you stopped by! Are you still living in NOVA?

      • Jessica says

Nope, I’m at Virginia Tech – I’m in vet school, I have a year and a few months left! But Richmond is a great city, I know you’ll have a blast living there

I love belonging to a gym. Even though I have a free gym at my university, I still go to LA Fitness because it’s right across the street from my townhouse and then I have it whenever I travel. I also think the environment makes working out more fun than by yourself, and the fitness classes are awesome!

after belonging to a gym for as long as i can remember, and then not having a gym membership for the first several months of our marriage, i realize how much i really do appreciate having a gym membership. it is possible to get your workouts in and stay fit at home, but having that gym community and fitness classes available makes it more motivating and fun for me. enjoy it! :)

I use to think the same way but joining a gym was one of the best decisions I’ve made this year. I have so much more confidence in everything I do. The gym has totally helped with my weight loss. If being healthy and working on being strong is selfish then yes I guess joining a gym can be a selfish move

Congrats! You’re going to have a blast finding new stuff to do at the gym and going to cool classes! Heck NO it’s not selfish. I don’t have room in my budget at all right now for a gym membership but I still have one because it’s really important for my health, end of story.

gahhhh how exciting! i wish i could still take spin but now i have to be at work earlier so i can’t booooo :( you’re going to have so much fun!!

Since I work from home and try not to go out much during the week, the gym has become my social time as well as my fitness time! It definitely does not seem like a waste of time, more motivation to go if you are paying for it. :) I think you will love going to fitness classes. Congrats on your recent move, your view looks amazing!
